LAKES IN VALLE

Practical information

It is said that there is a lake for every day of the year. Even if you have to start counting puddles, it is true that there is a very large number of lakes in the area.

The lakes were formed when the ice sheet began to retreat 10,000 years ago.

    Husgärdessjön

You who are checking into our 5-bed cabin number 3 are staying in the cabin named after “our own” lake. Husgärdessjön is, in fact, the lake located here at Valle Camping.

The lake, with an area of 0.326 square kilometers, is the 4th largest of the Vallesjöarna. When you swim out a bit from the pier, be careful not to lose your glasses or keys; the lake is actually close to 12 meters deep.

The lake is fed by a canal from Skärvalången via Vagnsjön, while the outlet flows to the newly restored Spånnsjön, then onward to Vingsjön and Hornborgasjön. Eventually, the water reaches Lake Vänern and the Göta River. Through a canal, Husgärdessjön is also connected to Ökullasjön. There are perch, pike, bream, and roach in the lake.

Here you can read more about Husgärdessjön specifically.

    FISHING IN HUSGÄRDESSJÖN

Fishing rights in Husgärdessjön are individual and held by the owners of the fishing rights. There are no fishing licenses available and the public is not allowed to fish in the lake. If you can prove that you are staying at Valle Camping, you have the opportunity to fish in Husgärdessjön through a special permit from the fishing rights owner. Contact the reception for more information.

You can find more information about fishing in Lake Husgärdessjön here.

    Vingsjön

Or Lake Vingasjön as it is called on the maps. Everyone we know, however, calls it Vingsjön, and it is named after Norra Ving, so we will continue to call it Vingsjön. Here is a municipal bathing area and a designated spot for all residents of Axvall on sunny summer days.

Here, the water flows from Husgärdessjön on its way out to Hornborgasjön. Between Vingsjön and Hornborgasjön, it’s only two kilometers.

One can argue whether the lake belongs to Vallesjöarna or not, but we choose to consider it one of Vallesjöarna, after all, it was in Axvall that Valle Municipality once had its municipal office :).

The lake is therefore the 10th largest among Vallesjöarna (0.151 square kilometers).

Vingsjön is only 5 meters deep. It is believed that it was deeper, but sediment from stormwater and sewage that was directed here in the past has made it shallower. Among the fish found in the lake are perch, bream, roach, pike, ide, bleak, and rudd.

We have chosen to name cottage 2 (5-bed cottage) Vingsjön.

    Back to the map

    Stakasjön

Stakasjön is located near the church in the village of Eggby and, with its 0.0528 square kilometers, is a small lake (number 16 among the Vallesjöarna). The lake is situated in the Natura 2000 area of Höjentorp-Drottningkullen. Just like in the other Vallesjöar, the water visibility is good, with a visibility depth of around 3 meters, and the depth in Stakasjön is up to 13.5 meters.

Stakasjön has given its name to Room 1 in the hostel.

    Back to the map

    Ämten (Emten)

Ämten or Emten is the third largest lake in the Valle area (0.744 square kilometers). The lake is 20 meters deep and is primarily inhabited by perch and pike, but there are also some roaches, tenches, and bream. The lake is located in the Natura 2000 area of Eahagen and the nature reserve of Eahagen-Öglunda ängar. You can find more information about protected areas from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Those who check into room two in the hostel also check into the room we call Ämten!

    Fishing in lake Ämten.

In lake Ämten you can buy a fishing licence and be allowed to fish. Fishing in the lake Ämten may only be carried out with a rod from a boat and not closer than 100 metres to fixed jetties. Bait fishing from other waters is not allowed in the lakes. You may not catch crayfish.

Fishing is managed by the fishing association at Flämslätts Stifts- och Kursgård tel 0511-304 40. Fishing permits can be purchased via the website “ifiske” (LINK).

Fishing is therefore only allowed from a boat. Rowing boats can be rented at Flämslätts Stifts och kursgård.

    Back to the map

    Rommen

The Rommen is a very small lake and does not qualify for the top 20 list of the largest lakes in Valle. We lack information about its area. The lake receives its water from two other small lakes (Hacksjön via Dygergssjön and from springs on the Billingssluttningen slope). The water from Rommen flows further into Ämten. The lake is located within the Eahagen’s Natura 2000 area. You can read more about protected nature at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

    Back to the map

    Flämsjön

The Flämsjön is the second largest lake in the Valle area, covering an area of 1.1 square kilometers and reaching a depth of 15 meters. In Flämsjön, there is a popular public bathing area at the Svenska kyrkans stifts and kursgård Flämslätt.

Around the lake, there is also a approximately nine kilometers long hiking trail along paths, forest roads, and gravel roads through a very diverse landscape, sometimes with grazing animals, which takes about 2-3 hours to walk. You can, for example, start from Flämslätts stiftsgård. Read more about hiking in Valle here.

The most common fish in the lake are pike and perch.

The lake is located in the Natura 2000 area of Eahagen and the nature reserve of Eahagen-Öglunda ängar. You can read more about regulations in protected areas at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

    Back to the map

    Hattaren

Hattaren is a very small lake and it does not qualify among the 20 largest lakes in Valle. Water from Hattaren is surrounded by marshland and forest and flows through the lake Rinnaren before flowing into Flämsjön.

    Back to the map

    Lake Hornborga

Hornborgasjön is not really counted among the Vallesjöarna. If it were, with its 28 square kilometers, it would undoubtedly be the largest lake in Valle, albeit also the shallowest with its maximum depth of 1.5 meters!

Now we choose to include it in our list of Vallesjöarna anyway, since the lake is only 4 kilometers away (as the crow flies) and holds a special place for us and our guests. The majority of the lake is located in Falköping municipality, but the northern end of the lake and most of the western side are in Skara municipality

The water from Husgärdessjön finds its way through Vingsjön to Hornborgasjön on its journey towards Lake Vänern, the Göta River, and the sea.

Hornborgasjön is known for its cranes, and we have compiled our own page about the crane dance, which you can find here. However, Hornborgasjön offers fantastic nature experiences and birdwatching all year round. The lake is considered one of Sweden’s most important bird lakes. How about spotting species such as Honey Buzzard, White-fronted Goose (Greenland race), Bluethroat, Marsh Harrier, Ruff, Great Snipe, Eurasian Bittern, Common Kingfisher, Wood Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Little Owl, Corncrake, Eurasian Wryneck, Common Crane, Red-backed Shrike, or Barnacle Goose?

The lake and its surroundings are a nature reserve. You can find more information about protected areas in the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s mapping tool “Protected Nature“.

    Fishing in Lake Hornborga

Lake Hornborga is a nature reserve and during the period 20 March-15 July Lake Hornborga is covered by a bird sanctuary. The birds must not be disturbed!

Motorboats or other motorised craft may not be used.

Fishing licenses are sold for parts of Lake Hornborga, but you must respect the area boundaries.

    Back to the map

    Ökullasjön

Ökullasjön is located between the towns of Axvall and Varnhem, just east of Husgärdessjön. Ökullasjön is 0.15 km² in size, located at an altitude of 126.9 meters above sea level, with a maximum depth of approximately 7.5 meters (visibility depth of 4.5 meters). The outflow of Ökullasjön connects to the nearby Husgärdessjön through a small canal that links the lakes together. The northern part of the lake is part of the Ökull-Borregården nature reserve, which is also a Natura 2000 area.

The name of the lake comes from the Ökull farm located by the lake. Ökull was a royal estate during the Middle Ages, which was a place where the king’s local representative resided. The lands around Ökull-Borregården likely belonged to Varnhem Abbey at one time.

    FISHING IN ÖKULLASJÖN

Fishing rights in Ökullasjön are private and held by the fishing rights holders. There are no fishing licenses available, and the public is not allowed to fish in the lake.

    Back to the map

    Nycklasjön

Nycklasjön is situated at an elevation of 193.2 meters above sea level but is only 0.06 square kilometers in size (km2), barely larger than a pond. It is located near Valle Camping, right by Highway 49. The water from Nycklasjön flows through Tjursbergssjön before reaching Ökullasjön. Its inflow comes from the lakes Kusen and Tåsjön.

    Back to the map

    Grönsjön

Pointing out “Grönsjön” can be a bit confusing since there are two different lakes in the Valle area called “Grönsjön”.

The first one is slightly larger (0.039 square kilometers) and is located near the ruins of Höjentorp Castle, 128.3 meters above sea level, north of Valle Camping in the Höjentorp-Drottningkullen Natura 2000 area.

However, here we choose to highlight the smaller Grönsjön (approximately 0.006 square kilometers) which is closer to Valle Camping in the Ökull Borregården Nature Reserve. The lake is not very deep, around 2.5 meters, and most of the lake bottom is covered with pondweed. Water from this smaller lake flows onwards to Tjursbergssjön and Ökullasjön.

    Back to the map

    Tjursbergssjön

Tjursbergssjön, like Grönsjön, is a small lake (approximately 0.009 km2 square kilometers) near Valle Camping in the Ökull Borregården Nature Reserve. The lake is around 5 meters deep, with a visibility depth of nearly 3 meters, and it is abundant with mussels, including the common pond mussel and the large pond mussel. Water from Tjursbergssjön flows into Ökullasjön.

    Back to the map

    Kusen

The lake Kusen is located along road 49 a few kilometers from Valle Camping towards Skövde. The lake covers an area of 0.046 square kilometers and is situated at an elevation of 127.2 meters above sea level. The maximum depth of Kusen is approximately 8 meters with a visibility depth of around 3 meters. The lake is connected downstream to the nearby Tåsjön. Kusen is situated in the southern part of the Natura 2000 area Höjentorp-Drottningkullen.

Kusen should not be confused with the lake Stora Kusen, which is located further north and west of the Valle area in the region known as Istrum.

    Back to the map

    Tåsjön

Tåsjön is 0.11 (km2) square kilometers in size with a maximum depth of about 12 meters and a visibility depth of about 3 meters. Tåsjön is located at an altitude of 126.1 meters above sea level. In Tåsjön, there are large plateaus of calcareous-encrusted reed roots along the edges, which are common in other Vallesjöar. Tåsjön is located in the southern part of the Natura 2000 area Höjentorp-Drottningkullen.
