Niemand, der die mittelalterliche Stadt Skara besucht hat, wird wohl eine fl\u00fcchtige Sicht auf den Skara Dom entkommen k\u00f6nnen. Das Bistum Skara ist das \u00e4lteste in Schweden, und seine Domkirche ist eine der gr\u00f6\u00dften und \u00e4ltesten Kathedralen des Landes. Es soll dort m\u00f6glicherweise schon seit dem 11. Jahrhundert eine Kirche gegeben haben. Wie aus arch\u00e4ologischen Funden bei der Klosterkirche von Varnhem und Kata g\u00e5rd<\/a> hervorgeht, hat das Christentum hier in V\u00e4sterg\u00f6tland seine ersten Wurzeln geschlagen. <\/p>\n

Die aktuelle Kirchenstruktur aus Sandstein stammt jedoch aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, obwohl sie seitdem mehrmals radikal umgebaut wurde.<\/p>\n

Fr\u00fchere Holzkirche<\/h2>\n

Skara Domkirche ist der Heiligen Maria geweiht, und bereits im 11. Jahrhundert wurde an diesem Ort eine Holzkirche errichtet. Davon ist nichts mehr \u00fcbrig, aber ihre Krypta, die als Grabst\u00e4tte f\u00fcr einen Bischof diente, kann man auch heute noch unter der Kirche besichtigen. <\/p>\n

Von der Kathedrale aus Sandstein, die also die Holzkirche irgendwann im 12. Jahrhundert ersetzte, sind Teile in den westlichen Doppelt\u00fcrmen erhalten geblieben sowie in Form von drei eingemauerten Reliefs, die Adam und Eva, den Papst Gregor sowie einen Teil der Legende des Heiligen Staffan darstellen.<\/p>\n

Mehrere Umbauten<\/h2>\n

W\u00e4hrend des Mittelalters war Skara eine Gro\u00dfstadt mit 900 Einwohnern und ein Zentrum sowohl f\u00fcr die k\u00f6nigliche Macht als auch f\u00fcr die Kirche. W\u00e4hrend dieser Zeit wurde die Kirche radikal umgebaut und begann, das imposante Aussehen anzunehmen, das sie heute mit einem hohen Hauptschiff hat. <\/p>\n

Die Kirche wurde mehreren gr\u00f6\u00dferen Br\u00e4nden ausgesetzt, gefolgt von umfangreichen Renovierungen. Zum einen Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts, aber auch 1566, als die D\u00e4nen in der Stadt w\u00fcteten, sowie 1719 und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, als die Kirche brannte. Die umfangreichste Umgestaltung wurde jedoch nicht durch einen Brand verursacht, sondern durch Helgo Zettervall, der in den 1880er und 1890er Jahren die Kirche im gotischen Stil wiederherstellen wollte. Dies f\u00fchrte zu einer wahrscheinlich \u00fcbertriebenen gotischen Kathedrale im Vergleich zu dem, was im Mittelalter an diesem Ort existierte. Obwohl seitdem mehrere Umbauten durchgef\u00fchrt wurden, unter anderem nach dem Brand Anfang der 1940er Jahre, ist die Skara Domkirche eine pr\u00e4chtige Kathedrale, die einen Besuch wert ist. <\/p>\n

Hohe T\u00fcrme, pr\u00e4chtige Grabdenkm\u00e4ler, eine Krypta und Sch\u00e4tze<\/h2>\n

In der Kirche findet man unter anderem ein pr\u00e4chtiges Grabdenkmal aus Marmor und Alabaster, das 1636 erbaut wurde, das sogenannte Soop-Grabdenkmal. Hier befinden sich auch die mittelalterliche Krypta und eine „Schatzkammer“ mit mehreren einzigartigen Sch\u00e4tzen. Die sch\u00f6nen Kirchenfenster wurden von Bo Beskow angefertigt. <\/p>\n

Skara Domkirche befindet sich in Skara, 11 km von Valle Camping entfernt (12 Minuten mit dem Auto, 37 Minuten mit dem Fahrrad).
